Middle Eastern Inspired Date and Walnut Cake

Fluffy date and walnut loaf cake drizzled with warm Omani honey.

COOKS IN 1.5 hour


300 gms plain flour
200 dried dates, chopped
100 gms walnuts, chopped
30 gms unsalted butter
240 ml boiling water
140 gms brown sugar
½ cup Mazoon Dairy Yoghurt
2 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking Soda
4 tsp warm Omani honey
1½ tsp ground mixed spices


  1. Place dates in a bowl with butter and baking soda.
  2. Pour boiling water and stir until the butter has melted, and keep aside.
  3. Place the sugar and eggs in a large bowl and beat well to combine.
  4. Add the cooled date mixture.
  5. Sift in the flour, baking powder and mixed spice.
  6. Add the walnuts and stir together until thoroughly mixed.
  7. Whisk the yoghurt and add to the mix.
  8. Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf tin and bake in a preheated oven for 1 hour, until the cake has risen and browned.
  9. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool.
  10. Decorate with chopped nuts, dates and a drizzle of warm Omani honey. Gather the whole family around the table to enjoy this decadent cake!
